We are on the cusp of a new energy revolution. It will change everything
This is a publication on that revolution
As a journalist and commentator of 15 years, I’ve been writing about climate change for a loooong time. I’ve also been painfully aware that trying to make people feel guilty, alarmed or shamed into action doesn’t always work. (Hell, I even got blacklisted from BBC political programs because I shamed Andrew Neil over his denialism). I think there is a better way.
Energy Disrupt is a publication about the future. It’s about the coming energy revolution. The media and politicians call it an “energy transition” – from coal, oil and gas to solar and wind power – but I think this understates what is going on. Energy is about to get exponentially cheaper and far more abundant. And that will create a thousand new industries. It will transform everything, especially how we live and work. I don’t think this point is widely understood yet.
Energy Disrupt is about the coming energy revolution and how it will transform our worlds. This revolution isn’t just transformative, it is necessary to prevent large-scale disruption from climate change. The energy transformation also needs an immense amount of public and private investment. This publication is here to encourage that and cover it. We want everyone to invest in and own a piece of the future.
In the weekly email I will share some of the big stories that caught my eye and explain why they matter. This is a publication about new technology, new investment and a potentially transformative future in energy.
1. The coming energy revolution
Remember when PCs took off in the 90s? That led to the internet, social media, a telecoms boom, smartphones and wireless tech. It spawned a thousand of new industries. We are on that cusp again.
Most people think renewable energy is expensive. A decade ago, it was. But prices have fallen faster than anyone expected. Renewable energy is now the cheapest form of electricity in human history. And prices are about to get a lot lower. With the newest wind turbines, one spin alone can power a home for a day. Most people haven’t even realised how quickly clean energy has become so cheap.
2. It is about how cheap energy will change everything
As the price of energy falls, everything that relies on it will get far cheaper too. Industries like transportation are already being revolutionised. Other industries that also rely heavily on energy (food, agriculture, computing, scientific research – for a start) will also be transformed.
Energy Disrupt will explain how. It will focus on the technologies, people, companies and organisations changing the future. To understand how the world is changing.
3. It is about investing in the future
The energy revolution needs investment on an immense scale in a short amount of time. A lot of public and private investment. Into clean energy (solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, fusion), electric vehicles, batteries, lighting, electric grids, carbon capture and more.
Investment into energy startups is shooting up. Venture capitalists are pouring money into clean energy startups. Car companies like Tesla have already become among the biggest names in the world. New ones like Lucid Air are springing up too.
New industries will spring up. New companies will be built. New types of jobs will be created. As the US President Joe Biden said:
If this is like the start of the PC revolution, who will be the next: HP, Lenovo, Microsoft, Apple or Google? Who will be the next Tesla?
4. It is about climate change
I know all of you care about the future and climate change as I do. But we don’t have to wallow in doom and gloom. We don’t need to be constantly shamed or made fearful. We don’t need to watch from the sidelines either.
The energy revolution won’t just transform our lives in exciting ways, it will avert catastrophic climate change. It is necessary. By investing into clean energy we are directly stopping climate change.

I also want this to be a conversation with others equally excited about this revolution. Tell me what you’re reading and what I should be paying attention (as a comment or by email).
Send me your investment ideas and analysis! I may publish it. Maybe we can own a piece of the future, together.
I wanted to launch a newsletter not just to share what I’m reading, but build a community of people as excited in this as I am. I hope you will join me on this journey.
